Roll The Bones
'Roll The Bones' are giant 'goat' fuzzy dice from my performance To The Victor Belongs The Spoils at Unix Gallery Sept 2018.
To The Victor Belongs The Spoils is an abstract representation of human competitiveness and competition. Imagine yourself observing a ritual from another time and another realm. You enter a room with two different colors, two different shapes, two different flags, and one species wearing two different uniforms. A setting that appears to be two teams in an ambiguous competition. What you see is a game without end and without purpose.
Two goats in colorful uniforms wander throughout the gallery. Goats are intelligent and playful but impulsive, unpredictable, and devious, like humans they evoke a sense of independence. Four sculptures resembling piñatas hang from the ceilings throughout the space like adorned prizes. Bok choy was attached to strings hanging from each of the pinata sculptures that were suspended from the ceiling.
The dice were symbolic objects in the performance representing the element of chance. Gambling on your favorite side, chasing the odds, rolling the dice to victory. Hooves replaced the dots on the dice, and the giant size added to the ridicule of the performance itself. 2 sets were made for the performance and were on display in the gallery. This is one of the 2 artworks.
